Restoring the Ocean, Empowering Communities

The Honu Movement is a powerful initiative dedicated to combating plastic pollution in the ocean while creating lasting social impact. Founded with the mission to reduce plastic waste and protect marine ecosystems, the movement combines environmental cleanup, local recycling, education, and poverty reduction to create a holistic approach to change.

Their vision goes beyond removing plastic—it’s about empowering individuals and communities to take action and restore balance to the environment. With a focus on Southeast Asia, one of the most affected regions by plastic pollution, The Honu Movement tackles the problem where it's needed most.

Removing Plastic from the Ocean

The Honu Movement actively removes plastic waste from the ocean, focusing on non-invasive cleanup methods that protect marine life. In 2021 alone, they collected over 285,000 kilograms of plastic in Southeast Asia. Instead of using harmful machinery, they rely on manual methods such as nets and their custom-built cleanup boat Moana Hina, which allows them to operate efficiently and safely.

Recycling and Reusing Plastic Locally

All collected plastic is 100% recycled locally. After sorting, the plastic is processed by certified recycling partners and transformed into sustainable products like the Honu Backpack. Excess plastic is even used as river fuel, reducing CO₂ emissions and giving waste a second life. This closed-loop system minimizes environmental impact and supports the local economy.

Preventing Future Plastic Waste

Prevention is a core part of their mission. The Honu Movement runs education and outreach programs, particularly aimed at children, to promote sustainable habits and encourage plastic-free lifestyles. Upcycling initiatives and hands-on workshops empower communities to take ownership of their environmental impact and embrace long-term solutions.

Empowering Communities and Fighting Poverty

The movement doesn’t just clean the ocean—it lifts people up. With over 100 full-time employees in Southeast Asia, The Honu Movement provides fair wages, health insurance, and educational opportunities for workers and their families. They also invest in community development projects, including clean water access, waste collection systems, and rebuilding efforts after natural disasters.
